Montevideo Today

Montevideo has the appearance of a large garden due to its healthy climate, many green squares, parks and gardens. The long line of sandy beaches also add to its natural beauty. The old part of the city (cuidad Vieja) has colonial style architecture and in the recent years the government has made a lot of effort in restoring the old buildings. The center of the city begins where the old city ends, This is the down town of Montevideo with various shops, restaurants, cinemas and theaters. In this part of the city the imported European urbanism is noticeable. there are some magnificent Belle Epoque architecture and beautiful squares. The main university, the national Library, various ministries and several embassies are also situated in the city center.
